Phasing Out Chemical Dyes
U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has initiated a significant policy shift to phase out artificial food dyes from the American food supply by the end of 2026. This initiative is part of the broader "Make America Healthy Again" campaign, aiming to address health concerns associated with synthetic dyes, particularly their potential links to behavioral issues in children and chronic illnesses like obesity and diabetes.
The FDA, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, is working to revoke authorizations for certain synthetic dyes, including Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, and expedite the removal of others such as FD&C Red No. 3, which has been linked to cancer in animal studies. The agency is also encouraging manufacturers to transition to natural dye alternatives like beet juice, carrot juice, and butterfly pea flower extract
