Using Trade As A Weapon

President Donald Trump said he is not ruling out deploying US ground troops to Iran if necessary, following major US-Israeli airstrikes under Operation Epic Fury that he claims killed 49 top Iranian leaders, including Ali Khamenei. Trump said the operation is ahead of schedule and justified the strikes by citing intelligence that Iran was resuming nuclear weapons development at a new site. While no US troops are currently in Iran, officials have not ruled out future deployment. Polls show mixed public support, but Trump defended the action as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The Art Of The Pause

The White House announced a “historic” trade agreement between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, finalized during a meeting in Busan, South Korea. The deal, described as a major victory, includes U.S. tariff reductions and Chinese commitments to curb fentanyl chemical exports, ease restrictions on rare earth materials, and reopen markets to American agricultural goods. China will also lift retaliatory measures against major U.S. companies. The administration said the agreement strengthens U.S. economic and national security while prioritizing American workers and farmers.

German Firms Asks To Hand Over Sensitive Data for Rare Earth Elements

German companies are being required by Chinese authorities to hand over detailed technical and commercial information — including product blueprints, supply-chain data, and customer lists — to obtain import and export licenses for critical materials like rare earths. Because Germany depends heavily on China for these resources, firms feel compelled to comply. Analysts warn that this gives Beijing insight into key vulnerabilities in Germany’s manufacturing sector and could provide China with economic leverage. The German government has expressed concern but admits it lacks oversight of what companies share and has struggled to reduce its dependence on China despite calls to “de-risk” supply chains.

Japan's New Defense Strategy

Most are asking, "Why should I care?" You should. Prices shift before the headlines hit.

The United States has endorsed Japan’s decision to accelerate its military buildup and raise defense spending in response to growing regional threats, particularly from China. During a visit to Tokyo, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s plan to boost defense investment to 2% of Japan’s GDP ahead of schedule, signaling a major shift from Japan’s traditional pacifist stance. The move, which includes faster delivery of U.S.-made missiles, highlights a strengthened U.S.-Japan alliance aimed at deterring aggression from China, North Korea, and Russia.

Are You Blinded By Politics?

Most people are. People see what they believe, which also gets them into trouble trading markets.

Sanctions on Russia are likely to increase gas prices because Russia is one of the world’s largest exporters of natural gas and oil. When sanctions restrict its ability to sell or transport these resources—by limiting exports, blocking financial transactions, or cutting access to key markets—the global supply of gas decreases. With less supply available, especially to energy-dependent regions like Europe, prices rise due to increased competition for alternative sources. Additionally, uncertainty and geopolitical tensions caused by sanctions often drive speculative price spikes in global energy markets.

Are you ready for pain at the pump? You should be.

Expanding Scope Of The New Monroe Doctrine

Tensions between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump have escalated sharply, with Petro accusing Trump of ignorance and disrespect after Trump criticized Colombia’s drug policies and threatened to cut aid. Petro defended his peace efforts and rejected U.S. military actions, including a strike that allegedly killed a Colombian fisherman, as violations of sovereignty. The Colombian government condemned Trump’s statements and highlighted its sacrifices in fighting drug trafficking.

Despite Petro's criticism of recent U.S. strikes, his administration plans to prosecute survivors of a suspected drug submersible. Meanwhile, Trump announced an end to U.S. subsidies to Colombia, calling them a “rip off.” Analysts warn that deteriorating U.S.-Colombia relations could have serious consequences for regional security, especially as tensions with Venezuela rise.

China Military Purges Speaks to Us

China has expelled two of its top military leaders — General He Weidong, the second-highest-ranking officer, and Admiral Miao Hua — along with seven other senior officials from the Communist Party and military over serious corruption allegations. This marks the most significant purge of the People’s Liberation Army leadership since the Cultural Revolution. General He, a close ally of President Xi Jinping and a Politburo member, is the most senior active commander to be removed in decades. The officials are accused of grave disciplinary violations and crimes involving vast sums of money. Their removal comes just before a key Communist Party meeting, where further personnel changes are expected. Analysts see the move as part of Xi Jinping’s ongoing efforts to consolidate power and tighten control over the military and party institutions.

The West's Economic Warfare Against China

The Dutch government has taken control of Nexperia, a Chinese-owned chipmaker based in the Netherlands, citing serious governance concerns and the need to protect European semiconductor supply and economic security. The move, made under the Goods Availability Act, allows the government to intervene in company decisions to safeguard critical technology and ensure continuity in emergencies. Nexperia’s parent company, Wingtech, which was added to the U.S. national security “entity list” in 2024, has vowed to defend its rights and seek government support. The takeover risks escalating EU-China tensions, with Chinese industry groups calling the action discriminatory. The Dutch government emphasized that Nexperia’s operations will continue as normal.

An All Out Trade War, The Public Has No Idea

Starting October 14, new U.S. port fees targeting Chinese-made or Chinese-linked vessels are creating confusion among shipowners and ocean carriers, especially regarding whether financing deals with Chinese lessors could make their vessels subject to the fees. The uncertainty stems from vague rules set by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), which do not clearly define how vessel financing structures factor into ownership or control.

China, now the global leader in shipbuilding and ship financing, has become deeply embedded in the global maritime economy. Many Western shipowners use Chinese leasing arrangements, which could now make them liable for port fees, potentially up to $45 million annually per vessel by 2028. In response, some shipowners are exploring refinancing with non-Chinese lenders, despite higher costs and the unclear long-term status of the U.S. fees.

The port fees are tiered: the highest applies to vessels owned or operated by Chinese entities or built in China, while a lower fee targets non-Chinese companies using Chinese-built vessels. U.S.-flagged ships are exempt if they fall into specific categories, such as smaller size, LNG tankers, or specialized vessels.

China has retaliated by imposing its own port fees on U.S.-flagged vessels, raising fears of future port bans. Meanwhile, some companies, like Okeanis Eco Tankers and Seaspan, have moved financing and operations away from China.

Overall, the lack of U.S. guidance has triggered a rush by shipping firms to review financing arrangements, assess exposure, and in some cases, restructure operations, as they try to navigate rising costs and regulatory uncertainty.

Rare Earth Metals, New Monroe Doctrine & Trade War

President Donald Trump indicated he might skip a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his upcoming Asia trip, pointing to China’s new restrictions on rare earth exports as a key issue. Trump threatened a steep hike in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising concerns about a potential revival of U.S.-China trade tensions. China’s recent export controls on rare earth elements, vital for U.S. tech and defense sectors, led Trump to accuse Beijing of economic manipulation.

While no meeting has been officially canceled, Trump’s comments heighten friction ahead of the APEC summit in South Korea. The S&P 500, as shown in the finance card above, dropped significantly (closing at 653.02 USD on October 10, 2025, down from a previous close of 671.16 USD), reflecting market unease. Analysts caution that this could unravel the existing tariff truce, risking broader global economic fallout as both nations show little inclination to back down.

Minerals Deal Kicks Can Down The Road?

While the US Ukraine minerals deal holds long-term strategic value by strengthening U.S.-Ukraine ties and potentially diversifying critical mineral sources, its immediate economic and supply chain benefits are limited. The success of the agreement hinges on resolving security issues, rebuilding infrastructure, updating geological data, and developing processing capabilities. These factors that will take considerable time, investment, which questions the overall long term value of the deal.

US and China Trade War, A Dangerous Game

As of April 9, 2025, the U.S.-China trade conflict has escalated significantly, marked by increased tariffs and retaliatory measures. President Trump announced a 125% tariff on Chinese imports, escalating from previous percentages, while delaying implementing all other tariffs by 90 days. In response, China imposed an 84% tariff on U.S. goods and restricted business with 18 American companies, primarily in defense-related industries.
