China Military Purges Speaks to Us

China has expelled two of its top military leaders — General He Weidong, the second-highest-ranking officer, and Admiral Miao Hua — along with seven other senior officials from the Communist Party and military over serious corruption allegations. This marks the most significant purge of the People’s Liberation Army leadership since the Cultural Revolution. General He, a close ally of President Xi Jinping and a Politburo member, is the most senior active commander to be removed in decades. The officials are accused of grave disciplinary violations and crimes involving vast sums of money. Their removal comes just before a key Communist Party meeting, where further personnel changes are expected. Analysts see the move as part of Xi Jinping’s ongoing efforts to consolidate power and tighten control over the military and party institutions.
