German Firms Asks To Hand Over Sensitive Data for Rare Earth Elements
German companies are being required by Chinese authorities to hand over detailed technical and commercial information — including product blueprints, supply-chain data, and customer lists — to obtain import and export licenses for critical materials like rare earths. Because Germany depends heavily on China for these resources, firms feel compelled to comply. Analysts warn that this gives Beijing insight into key vulnerabilities in Germany’s manufacturing sector and could provide China with economic leverage. The German government has expressed concern but admits it lacks oversight of what companies share and has struggled to reduce its dependence on China despite calls to “de-risk” supply chains.
