Expanding Scope Of The New Monroe Doctrine
Tensions between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and U.S. President Donald Trump have escalated sharply, with Petro accusing Trump of ignorance and disrespect after Trump criticized Colombia’s drug policies and threatened to cut aid. Petro defended his peace efforts and rejected U.S. military actions, including a strike that allegedly killed a Colombian fisherman, as violations of sovereignty. The Colombian government condemned Trump’s statements and highlighted its sacrifices in fighting drug trafficking.
Despite Petro's criticism of recent U.S. strikes, his administration plans to prosecute survivors of a suspected drug submersible.
