Interesting energy builds this week. The Special Report - US Stocks & Risk-on/(off) discusses the potential for stocks to lead not the economy but also a broader risk-on money flows that could lift nearly all asset groups tracked in the Matrix higher. The discussion focuses on critical lines in the sand that, if broken, trigger risk-on flows.
Risk-on is often associated with a strong economic backdrop. The backdrop could be different this time. Rising stock prices as the economy weakens or remains weak is possible when traditional safe havens are not considered safe. The sovereign debt market has not caught a bid, or seen material accumulation (energy) as the domestic and global economy has weakened. This suggests that the invisible hand no longer considers them a place to park. This opens the dollar to new safe havens such as the dollar, stocks, commodities, and eventually precious metals.
