Iran Leaders Abandoning Ship
Protests across Iran erupted amid a severe economic crisis marked by the rial’s collapse, which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attributed to President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions targeting Iran’s oil revenues. Bessent said the US is nearing the “endgame” of Trump’s strategy, claiming the regime is facing total financial collapse. The demonstrations were met with violent crackdowns: Iranian opposition outlet Iran International estimated more than 12,000 deaths over two days, while rights group HRANA has confirmed at least 2,615 fatalities so far, including security personnel.
