EU Wants To Dump US Credit Cards
European Payments Initiative CEO Martina Weimert warns that Europe is overly reliant on U.S. payment giants Visa and Mastercard, which handle nearly two-thirds of Eurozone card transactions. With cash use declining and few national alternatives, officials fear strategic vulnerability. The EPI has launched Wero to build a cross-border European system, while debate continues with the European Central Bank over whether a digital euro or private solutions should secure Europe’s payment independence.
