Holiday Retail Sales

U.S. retail sales stalled in December, rising 0% from November and missing expectations, as bad weather, tariffs, and persistent inflation weighed on holiday shopping. Annual sales growth slowed to 2.4%, trailing inflation, with declines in several categories like furniture, clothing, and electronics. Higher-income consumers continued spending, while lower- and middle-income shoppers pulled back. Despite solid fourth-quarter GDP estimates, the weak retail data may lower growth forecasts. Other reports showed moderating wage growth and mixed import and export prices.
