German Election Changed Nothing
In the recent German election, the mainstream conservatives, led by Friedrich Merz, emerged victorious in 2025. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), garnered the largest share of votes. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured second place.
The center-left Social Democrats (SPD), headed by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, experienced their worst performance in a federal election. Additionally, the neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) faced substantial losses and failed to meet the 5% threshold to enter the Bundestag.
With the CDU/CSU winning 208 seats in the Bundestag, they will need to form a coalition to achieve a majority. Potential coalition options include a two-way grand coalition with the SPD or a three-way coalition involving the Greens.

President Trump reacted to the recent German election results on Truth Social, calling it a “great day for Germany.” He mentioned that, much like in the USA, the people of Germany grew tired of the “no common sense agenda,” particularly on issues like energy and immigration2. Trump's comments reflect a broader trend of global discontent with liberal policies and a shift towards conservative and nationalist movements.

Many view the German election results as a victory towards common sense, but don't be so sure about that.
