Authoritarian Rule & Digital IDs
The UK government has officially responded to a petition opposing the introduction of a digital ID system, which has gathered 2.7 million signatures. Despite widespread public backlash, Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the digital ID, dubbed the “Brit Card,” will be mandatory for all working-age citizens by the end of this parliament. The ID will be required for employment and other services, though it will be free and not a criminal offense to be without one. The government argues the measure will combat illegal immigration and streamline access to services, but public concern and opposition remain high.
