OpenAI, despite never turning a profit, has become deeply embedded in the infrastructure of major tech companies. Microsoft, Oracle, and Nvidia have each committed massive sums—hundreds of billions of dollars collectively—on the assumption that OpenAI will succeed. If it were to fail, these companies’ valuations and cash flows could collapse, triggering a broader crisis across the tech sector, similar to the contagion seen in the 2008 financial meltdown. In reality, OpenAI is likely too integral to be allowed to fail outright; if it ever nears collapse, it would probably be rescued through government intervention or a private bailout.
