Dick Cheney's Legacy
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a prominent and polarizing Republican figure, died at 84 on Monday, November 3, 2025. In recent years, he and his daughter, ex-Rep. Liz Cheney, became vocal critics of Donald Trump, opposing his 2020 election denial and the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
In 2024, both endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris, with Dick Cheney calling Trump the greatest threat to the republic in U.S. history for trying to "steal the last election using lies and violence." Liz Cheney, who lost her 2022 reelection bid over her anti-Trump stance, served as vice chair of the House January 6 committee and campaigned for Harris.
Trump has not commented on Cheney's death; the White House lowered flags to half-staff per law but issued no proclamation. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Trump was aware. Trump previously dismissed the Cheney's as "irrelevant RINO's" and called for jailing January 6 committee members. In a 2022 ad, Dick Cheney branded Trump a "coward" for lying about the election.
