EU Is In Trouble
European Union leaders agreed to lend Ukraine €90bn over the next two years to help cover its funding shortfall, after failing to reach consensus on using frozen Russian assets. The loan, raised on capital markets and backed by the EU budget, would only be repaid if Russia pays reparations. EU officials and Ukrainian leaders hailed the deal as a boost to Ukraine’s economic resilience and negotiating position, despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia and reservations from the Czech Republic. The decision comes amid ongoing US-led talks with Russia and renewed debate among European leaders over how to pursue a negotiated end to the war.
