Unrealistic Tax Hikes Coming To Your City And Rural Community Soon

Boston homeowners are facing a 13% property tax increase starting in January 2026, which will translate to an average $780 added to bills. The hike is largely due to declining commercial property values, which have fallen 6% since the pandemic, shifting more of the tax burden to residential properties. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu noted the increase will feel even higher initially because it will be applied retroactively to the prior quarter.

Wu has repeatedly proposed legislation to reduce the residential tax impact by raising commercial rates, but efforts have stalled in the state Senate. She warns that continued double-digit increases could strain residents financially and hurt Boston’s economic competitiveness.

Despite the tax hike, real estate experts say the city’s housing market remains strong, with buyers valuing Boston’s long-term stability and amenities, though the rising taxes are increasingly part of their considerations.
