NATO Act
This bill, titled the “Not A Trusted Organization Act” or “NATO Act,” would require the President to formally notify other nations of the United States’ intent to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty and NATO. The legislation argues that NATO’s original purpose—to counter the Soviet Union—became obsolete after the Soviet and Warsaw Pact collapse. It asserts that U.S. assurances against NATO’s eastward expansion were broken, contributing to rising tensions with Russia. The findings claim NATO enlargement has provoked Russian security concerns, that European members rely too heavily on U.S. defense spending, and that much fail to meet agreed defense-spending targets. Concluding that Europe can balance Russia without U.S. involvement, the bill states that continued U.S. membership in NATO no longer serves American national security interests.
