Previously, the Federal Government's Treasury Access Symbol (TAS) field, which links a payment to a specific budget line, was optional. This applied to about $4.7 trillion in payments. Since it was often left blank, it was very difficult to trace where the money was actually going. Now that the TAS field is required, it will significantly improve the traceability and transparency of these payments.
