US Want Bagram Airbase Back In Afghanistan
President Trump stated on Thursday that his administration is trying to regain control of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan from the Taliban. Speaking alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump criticized President Biden’s 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan and hinted that the Taliban may need something from the U.S., though he didn’t elaborate. Trump emphasized Bagram’s strategic location near China’s nuclear sites and said he wants the base back “right away.”
The U.S. originally took control of Bagram in 2001 but abandoned it in July 2021, leaving it to Afghan forces. The Taliban captured it in August 2021 as Kabul fell. In 2024, Taliban forces were seen operating from the base. Earlier this year, U.S. officials met with the Taliban in Kabul for the first time since the withdrawal, discussing bilateral relations and ongoing hostage negotiations.
