Preparation For War Repeated Throughout Europe
Sweden’s Defense Minister Pål Jonson warned that Europe must prepare for a potential conflict with Russia by adopting a “war mode” mindset to effectively deter aggression and defend peace. In an October 19 interview, he emphasized the need for stronger military support for Ukraine, including increased arms deliveries, tougher sanctions—especially on Russian energy—and using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s defense.
Jonson highlighted broad Swedish public support for higher defense spending and continued backing of Ukraine. He warned that Russia’s actions in the Baltic, including hybrid warfare and maritime provocations, require constant NATO vigilance, asserting that any violation of allied airspace or waters would provoke a firm response.
He also defended Europe’s reliance on U.S. weapon systems for Ukraine due to urgent battlefield needs but underscored the importance of strengthening Europe’s own defense industry over time.
