DOGE, Oh That Doesn't Exist Anymore

The Musk-backed Department of Government Efficiency, created on Trump’s first day of his second term and intended to run through mid-2026, has been quietly shut down months early. OPM Director Scott Kupor confirmed the agency no longer exists as a centralized entity, marking the first official acknowledgment of its dismantling. DOGE had moved aggressively across federal departments—cutting budgets, eliminating jobs, and taking control of key technology systems—while Musk publicly promoted it as a dramatic attack on bureaucracy. Its claims of huge savings were never independently verified and drew criticism, protests, and scrutiny over its access to sensitive data. After Musk’s break with Trump, staff departures and legal challenges accelerated the program’s collapse.

Although DOGE has ended, many of its functions have been absorbed by OPM, the hiring freeze tied to the initiative has been lifted, and several former DOGE officials have taken senior roles across the federal government. Joe Gebbia, one of its early leaders, now heads a new National Design Studio focused on modernizing federal websites, while the White House says it remains committed to reducing waste and inefficiency despite the program’s shutdown.

The trained seals from both sides of the aisle are clapping in victory without a clue to what's really happening.
