Europe's Growing Dependency On Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)
European governments face renewed criticism over continued purchases of Russian energy, after data showed Russia’s Yamal LNG terminal exported about €7.2 billion worth of liquefied natural gas to the EU in 2025. Despite an EU agreement to ban Russian LNG imports by 2027, a report by German NGO Urgewald found that more than 15 million tons of Yamal LNG were shipped to Europe last year, with the EU accounting for over 76% of the project’s global exports. France and Belgium were the largest importers. Campaigners warn that EU ports and buyers are effectively sustaining a key Kremlin energy project and helping finance Russia’s war in Ukraine, even as overall Russian fossil fuel imports to the bloc have fallen sharply since 2022.
