Australia Bans Hate Speech
Australia will recall federal parliament early to pass tougher hate-speech laws following the December 14 Bondi Beach mass shooting that killed 15 people at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the legislation will increase penalties for hate speech, ease visa denials based on racial bigotry, lower the threshold for banning hate groups, and authorize a gun buyback, while stressing that free expression must not target people based on identity.
The attack intensified concerns over antisemitism and prompted criticism of Albanese from Jewish groups and Israel. A Royal Commission will examine the shooting, antisemitism, and social cohesion. The debate has also spread to the arts, with dozens of writers withdrawing from the Adelaide Festival after an Australian Palestinian author was disinvited. Separately, New South Wales announced tougher measures to curb “hate preachers,” raising further discussion about the balance between public safety and free speech.
