Iran On The Edge
Information emerging from Iran suggests the government’s crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests has been far deadlier than previously reported. Sources speaking to CBS News, including one inside Iran, say activist groups estimate at least 12,000 people may have been killed, with some placing the toll as high as 20,000, though these figures cannot be independently verified. Western officials, including the U.K.’s foreign secretary, believe deaths may number in the thousands and could rise further.
Determining the true scale has been hampered by a near-total internet and communications blackout imposed by Iranian authorities, alongside alleged intimidation of hospitals treating injured protesters. Iranian officials have cited much lower figures, blaming unrest on foreign-backed “terrorists,” while videos verified by CBS News show hundreds of bodies at a Tehran-area morgue bearing gunshot and other severe wounds.
The protests, sparked by economic hardship, spread across all 31 provinces and evolved into calls for the overthrow of Iran’s Islamic rulers. International concern has grown, with activists warning the crackdown may represent one of the deadliest episodes of repression since the 1979 revolution and urging global action to protect civilians and restore Iranians’ ability to communicate with the outside world.
