Venezuela, China, and New Monroe Doctrine
The United States has seized two oil tankers linked to Venezuela in the Atlantic as part of President Donald Trump’s effort to control oil flows in the Americas and pressure Venezuela’s socialist government. The move follows a U.S. military raid in Caracas that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and marks an escalation of enforcement against vessels accused of transporting sanctioned oil. U.S. officials say the tankers are part of a “shadow fleet” used to evade sanctions, while Russia and China condemned the actions as aggressive and destabilizing. Washington is simultaneously considering limited sanctions relief to allow U.S.-controlled sales of Venezuelan oil under terms aligned with American interests.
