Seattle elected Democratic Socialist Katie Wilson as mayor, prompting criticism over her lack of experience and progressive agenda. After previously blaming corporate greed for Kroger store closures, Wilson has pledged to raise progressive taxes, align with unions, and expand public services. Facing one of the nation’s highest office vacancy rates—over 26% citywide and 35% downtown—Wilson plans to introduce a vacancy tax on empty offices and has discussed converting offices into housing. Critics argue that crime, high business costs, and past COVID policies drove vacancies, and warn that higher taxes may push businesses and investment out of the city rather than revive downtown.
