Will Iran's New Leader Be Targeted?
Iranian hardliners held rallies across the country to show support for new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in early strikes during the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict. State institutions and security forces pledged loyalty to the new leader, while public reactions in Iran appeared divided—some viewing his rise as defiance against foreign enemies and others fearing it would block political change.
The conflict, involving Israel and the United States under President Donald Trump, has escalated tensions and reduced hopes for a quick end to the war. Fighting has disrupted global energy supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, driving oil prices above $100 per barrel and triggering sharp declines in global stock markets. Military strikes and missile exchanges have continued across the region, causing civilian casualties in Iran, Israel, and Lebanon while raising concerns about a prolonged Middle East energy crisis.
