Argentina Mid Terms

Argentine President Javier Milei won a decisive victory in Sunday’s midterm elections, strengthening his control of Congress and energizing his push for deep spending cuts and free-market reforms. His party, La Libertad Avanza, captured about 41.5% of the vote in Buenos Aires province—an upset in a region long dominated by Peronists—and expanded its seats in the lower house from 37 to 64 nationwide.

Analysts said the results exceeded expectations and will allow Milei to more easily defend his decrees and vetoes. Voters appeared cautiously optimistic, signaling continued support for his economic overhaul. Inflation has dropped from 12.8% before his inauguration to 2.1% last month, and Argentina has posted a fiscal surplus amid sweeping deregulation.

The U.S. government under President Donald Trump reportedly offered Argentina a $40 billion aid package tied to Milei’s performance. Trump congratulated him on Truth Social, calling the win a “landslide” and praising his leadership.
